Most toys accessible to children in Bhutan are imported plastic toys and more fit for commercial purposes than educative ones. Ugyen Wangmo started “Tsem” (meaning play) to provide Bhutanese parents with educational toys that can positively impact their children’s pastimes and serve as an alternative to the use of television and electronic devices. “Tsem” uses traditional and cultural Bhutanese images to manufacture toys to be sold at affordable rates. The toys include the Bhutanese National language “Dzongkha”, English alphabet blocks, puzzles, wooden shapes, and colored building blocks that are supplied to Early Learning Centers, schools, toy stores, and handicraft shops. The toys are also attractive to tourists.
